Helping Others Through Difficult Times

Seeing a family member suffer a life-limiting condition is always difficult. Everyone wants to be there for a loved one, but for many family caregivers, it gets complicated. Even with outside help, many people want to stay with their loved one to provide loving care and constant attention. For some, this means missing time from work, perhaps even the loss of a job.

"When my car broke down, I was unable to pay for repairs and for the gas I needed to get to and from the hospital to be with my terminally ill child. Community Hospice Foundation helped me and I was able to be with my child and still continue to work."

Many families are struggling to make ends meet even before a family member is stricken. Additional expenses, coupled with a loss of income can be particularly devastating for the entire family. The Foundation is able to help with expenses such as household bills, funerals, cremations, groceries, even gas expenses for hospital visits.

Our extensive network of caregivers allows us to identify those patients and families with the most critical needs, and because foundation work is done through our regular employees, there is virtually no administrative expense to dilute the value of gifts.

Donations are tax deductible and most are used to offer direct assistance to families in trouble, with a portion also being used to support ongoing programs, including Community Awareness and Educational Programs, Scholarships, Research, and Grants.

As a not-for-profit organization, the Foundation contributes to patients, families, and other non-profit organizations. Board members serve only on a voluntary basis and do not receive compensation. The Foundation has contributed to the following non-profit organizations.

• The Children's Program at the Cancer Recovery Foundation
• Bladen We Care - provides health care for residents (all ages) in Bladen County that do not qualify for health insurance.
• The Compassion Center - provides food, clothing, furniture, household items and durable medical equipment to those in need in Wilson County.
• The Helping Hands Clinic - provides medication and health care to indigent and uninsured patients in Lee County.
• National Multiple Sclerosis Society - sponsor for bike ride fund raiser in Craven County.
• Friends of the Cancer Center of Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation - sponsor for a camp that is held for children who have or have had a family member with a life-limiting condition.
• Duke University Cancer Research Program - "take a seat program" and cancer research.
• Sim White, BSW Memorial Scholarship - scholarship funds for social work at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
• Wilson County Department of Social Services - heating fund for individuals that cannot afford to keep their homes heated.
• American Cancer Society - Relay for Life sponsor in Bladen, Craven, Cumberland, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Robeson, Sampson, Wake, Wayne, and Wilson Counties.
• Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation National Cancer Survivor’s Day
• Zack’s Toy Chest – Provides toys for children at Duke and Pitt Memorial Hospitals.
• Local Food Banks

Community Hospice Foundation Scholarships

Thank you for your interest in the Community Hospice Foundation Scholarship Program. Currently, we offer scholarships at Nash Community College for palliative care nursing. At this time, we are in the process of establishing two more scholarships in the state of South Carolina.

The purpose of the Community Hospice Foundation Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to encourage college bound students to explore and study healthcare so consumers can continue to expect excellent administrators, researchers and practitioners.
